Troubleshoot a frozen/unresponsive iPad

PURPOSE

Screen gets stuck or frozen while using an iPad.


POTENTIAL CAUSES

  • Low battery charge
  • Problem app
  • Low storage


PROCESS

Restart the iPad.

  1. Hold the “Sleep/Wake” button on the tablet for a few seconds. 
  2. A screen will appear with a cue for you to “Slide to power off”.
  3. Slide the bar, then press the “Sleep/Wake” button again to restart the iPad.

Perform a forced restart.

  1. Hold the “Sleep/Wake” and “Home” buttons at the same time for a few seconds. 
  2. Release the buttons when the Apple logo appears.
  3. On iPads that don’t have a physical “Home” button follow the following:
    1. press and release the “Volume Up” button 
    2. press and release the “Volume Down” button 
    3. then press and hold the “Sleep/Wake” button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Charge the battery.

  1. An iPad may appear frozen when it is running on an extremely low battery charge.
  2. Plug it in for an hour and try again.


Delete a problem app.

  1. If your iPad freezes when you open a specific app, uninstalling the app may solve the problem.
  2. Open the App Store and select the problem app.
  3. Click “Uninstall”.

Free up storage.

  1. If you fill the space on your iPad with apps or pictures, it may freeze up on you.
  2. Identify apps that you don’t use anymore and uninstall them according to the instructions above.
